Have you ever needed to find a particular tool in your custom garage but had no idea where to look? Whether it was a hammer to hang a picture or a wrench to fix a leaky sink, not being able to easily find your tools can be a huge hassle. This is especially true if you need to quickly solve a home repair problem. That’s why it’s important to keep your tools organized.

However, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all formula for tool organization. In most cases, the placement of your tools will depend on the function. Are you a home renovator, a plumber, a carpenter, or a weekend warrior? Each of these skillsets comes with different tools and considerations. For example, a carpenter might need small tool storage while a home renovator will need easily accessible power tools.

While your tool storage needs might vastly differ from your neighbor’s, here are some universal tips that everyone on your block can utilize:

  • Create Areas for Different Tools
  • Use a Mobile Workbench
  • Install Slatwall Racks
  • Make the Most Out of Your Toolbox
  • Use Jars and Baskets for Hardware
  • Take Advantage of Unused Space on the Side of Cabinets
  • Create a Battery Recharging Station
  • Stay on Top of Organizing

If you’re ready to get the tools in your garage organized for good, then keep reading!

1. Create Areas for Different Tools

The very first thing that you’ll need to do is to take a thorough inventory of all of your tools. Once you know what tools you already have on hand, start grouping them into like categories. For instance, keep all small tools together, make a pile of all seasonal tools, and gather all of your power tools.

Next, create different areas of your garage for the different tools. Keep the tools you use most often near your workbench. Make room on your walls for tools you only use seasonally.

2. Use a Mobile Workbench

Keep the tools that you use most often in a mobile workbench. This way, you’ll always know where they are and have immediate access to them.

3. Install Slatwall Racks

Not all of your tools can be stored in a workbench or cabinets. For large power tools, you’ll need to store them in a convenient place where they’re not taking up precious floor space. The best way to do this is to install Slatwall racks near your workstation.

You can easily hang larger power tools, hooks, as well as clear bins and baskets for smaller items. Always clearly label the bins to know exactly where your tools are.

Seasonal tools, such as rakes, leaf blowers, shovels, and gardening supplies can be placed on Slatwall racks as well. This is an efficient storage system that works year-round. For smaller tools, like weed trimmers, hang them in clear totes from hooks.

4. Make the Most Out of Your Toolbox

Aside from organizing the tools in your garage, take a crack at organizing your toolbox at the same time. Sort all of the tools into like piles. All screwdrivers go together and all hammers go together. Then, start sorting those piles into sub-categories. So, Phillips-head screwdrivers will have their own pile and so will flathead screwdrivers. Always keep your toolbox by your workbench.

If you have duplicate tools you don’t use or need, donate them to charity.

5. Use Jars and Baskets for Hardware

Smaller hardware items, such as nails, bolts, and screws can easily get lost. Keep spare hardware in clear glass jars that are properly labeled. To avoid clogging up your counter space, install a hanging shelf to store the jars.

6. Take Advantage of Unused Space On the Side of Cabinets

If your garage is on the smaller side, it can be difficult to find a home for each of your tools. Get creative and take advantage of unused space by using the end of your workbench, the side of a cabinet, or bring in a tote bag for additional storage space.

7. Create a Battery Recharging Station

Modern cordless power tools are super convenient for quick home repairs. However, you can easily lose their chargers and batteries. Consider adding a charging station to your garage for your most-used power tools. Remember to install it near a power outlet.

8. Stay on Top of Organizing

Your tools can easily get disorganized again if you don’t keep them in order. Every month, take a quick inventory. Make sure that every item has a designated home.

Conclusion

With these eight tips, you’ll never have to hunt for your tools again. By installing Slatwall racks, keeping your most-used tools near or in your workbench, and storing smaller hardware in glass jars, your garage will become an efficient work area for all of your projects.
